The dividing line between the descriptions 'search engine marketing' and 'search engine optimization' is not sharp and clear cut. The latter is in fact a form of the former and the former cannot exist without the latter. The two expressions are like conjoined twins who are different and same at the same time.
search engine marketing, commonly known as SEM, is the marketing of web sites to get them a sought-after place in the results that search engines spew forth in answer to every customer query. Different online and offline marketing tactics are used to grab this right place in the search engine results, known as search engine ranking. The more common of these online search engine marketing methods are search engine optimization of the site, blogging, article writing, pay per click advertising, and paid inclusion.
