Today I am left wondering… How effective are Twitter trending topics? Trending topics used to be a place to look for the latest news, events, or information on a specific topic. Lately, it seems to be more of a place where spammers hang out and hijack the trending topics. Now, when viewing any given trending topic you are presented with irrelevant information and spam from people who are attempting to get their message seen by riding on the popularity of the trending topic.

Bot network uses Twitter

Apparently, the current hype about Twitter has not passed malware writers by. Jose Nazario of Arbor appears to have discovered a bot-net that users the Twitter micro-blogging service for its communication. In a blog entry, Nazario tells of a Twitter account "upd4t3" (leet-speak for "update") whose messages seem to be Base64 encoded. He suspects the account may be used to control a bot network through allowing its clients to pick up orders. The concept is not entirely new; in 2007, The H reported on a trojan using Web-2.0-sites like MySpace for communication.

Security firms discover botnet on Twitter

A Twitter account can be used as the command center for harnessing a "botnet" of virus-infected computers, security firms Arbor Networks and Symantec reported. In a blog post Friday, Symantec analyst Peter Coogan wrote that researchers found an account, @upd4t3, which was tweeting out links to download a piece malware called Downloader.Sninfs. The account has since been suspended by Twitter.

Although there exists a ‘Popular Topics’ feature, there is no obvious attempt to actually connect with the news and events; rather, there is just short, vague and duplicated statements, lacking the editorial quality we are accustomed to from respected news providers.

IAB research finds over 50% of B2B marketers using digital for lead generation, management and development.

Research from the Internet Advertising Bureau – the trade association for digital marketing – has found that B2B marketers are yet to see the brand-building potential of online, with only 7% of respondents using the medium with this objective. The survey of nearly 140 UK B2B marketing professionals found that online is still being used predominantly to drive sales, with 51% of the sample focusing their digital efforts on lead generation, management and development.

AdWeek 2009 Is Upon Us: The Future Is Here, It’s Just Not Widely Distributed…..

“The future is here, it’s just not widely distributed” is a quote one of Microsoft’s Research guru’s Bill Buxton uses a lot. I believe he attributes it to William Gibson, a science fiction writer…at least Bing says he’s the originator…anyway, with Advertising Week coming I was reminded of it and looking forward to hearing the industry luminaries talk about what is coming, only to realize it’s already here.

SEO is no place for amateurs

How Come everybody is nowadays an SEO Expert?

Let’s face it; not a day goes by where we don’t see someone offering their services as a Search Engine Optimization specialist. The strange thing is however, many of the people offering such services on the various forums tend to have no runs on the board themselves. Of course, I’m not saying there aren’t a great deal of reputable internet marketing services out there, but they are becoming increasingly outnumbered by those with little or no experience at all, and it is these people and their companies which are highly unlikely to ever produce satisfactory results for their clients.

Is image optimisation overrated?

First things first, I should clarify that I’m a big fan of image search. I use it all the time. But lately I’ve begun to question the real value image search provides businesses. To be honest, I’ve never really thought in any sort of depth about the art of image optimisation. While I’ve certainly read my fair share of articles on the topic from respected authors such as Tad, Maki, Liana Evans, Ian Lurie & Chris Pearson, it’s never been a traffic generation tactic I’ve employed. Because while there’s little doubt that image optimisation has the potential to increase traffic, the real question is whether that traffic holds any commercial value.
